Stainless steel: great for bathroom fittings. Not so much for jewelry.
I spent part of this summer in Florence and Venice, genuinely one of the most beautiful places on earth to window-shop for jewelry. Gold in every case, "precious" and "fine" on every sign, the Ponte Vecchio doing exactly what it's famous for.
Between the two cities, I walked into dozens of jewelry stores. Exactly one of them worked in real .925 sterling silver. One.
Everywhere else, it was some version of the same script: ask what a piece is made of, and you'll hear "18K gold plated." Full stop. Nobody volunteers what it's plated on. I had to ask,
specifically, more than once, before anyone would say it was actually brass or steel underneath.
That "what's underneath" question matters more than people think. Gold plating over a precious metal (sterling silver, for example) bonds properly and can last years of normal wear. Gold plating over a non-precious base like brass or stainless steel wears through much faster, sometimes within months, because the base metal just doesn't hold the plating the same way.
And here's the detail that actually got me: some of these same brands market their gold-plated stainless steel pieces as "water resistant," which sounds like a durability promise, but it isn't really answering the question you're asking. Water resistant tells you the metal won't rust if it gets wet. It says nothing about whether the gold layer on top is still going to be there in six months of normal wear. Two different questions. Only one actually matters for how the piece looks over time.
Here's what I ask now, every time:
- Ask what the plating is over, not just what the plating is.
- Don't let "water resistant" stand in for "durable." They're not the same claim.
- Still unsure? The magnet test works: gold and silver aren't magnetic, stainless steel is.

We only ever work with precious metals: solid sterling silver (.925), or solid gold in 14K, 18K,
or 22K. When a piece is gold-plated, it's plated over solid sterling silver, never steel or brass.
Built to actually hold up, not just resist a shower.
Starting today, we're also removing the upcharge on gold plating, on everything. Every finish, same price, no fine print, no upgrade fee at checkout.
